Kitset Homes NZ – Essential Information
For generations many New Zealanders have aspired to building their own home. Often using prefabricated kitset homes. However, following legislative changes in recent years, some Kiwis are under the impression that they can no longer build kitset homes in NZ themselves if they are not Licensed Building Practitioners.
This is not actually the case as there is a special exemption which allows Owner-Builders to carry out Restricted Building Work (work that affects the structure or weathertightness of their homes). You can apply for this exemption if:
- You are going to live in the home (including using it as a bach or holiday home)
- You carry out the Restricted Building Work to your home yourself, or with the help of unpaid friends or family members; and
- You have not used the Owner-Builder Exemption to carry out Restricted Building Work to any other home within the past 3 years.
Fraemohs Homes’ solid timber kitset homes are ideal for Owner-Builders wishing to build their own home or bach as they are very easy to construct. The walls in a Fraemohs kitset home are constructed from horizontal wall planks which fit together without nails. Each segment is labelled and all you need is the instructions and a sledgehammer to assemble the walls. At Fraemohs we like to describe it as wooden Lego for adults!
We also offer home-builders the flexibility to choose from standard plans or a custom-designed kitset home and the option of supplying their own windows and roof if they prefer.
